What it is

What is the AWARE Power Module?

The AWARE Power Module, or APM, is a sealed solar and battery power accessory that approximately quadruples the available power of an AWARE Flood Node. A standard node runs on its own solar array, and for most crossings and river corridors that is enough. The APM is for the sites that ask for more: a radar water level sensor, a shaded bank, or a critical asset that justifies a grid connection with battery backup.

Full-duty power for the radar water level sensor

The optional AWARE Water Level Radar (WLR) is a non-contact radar water level sensor for sites where a submerged sensor is hard to place or maintain. Radar draws more power than a standard node supplies on its own. The APM closes that gap and enables full use of the radar.

Solar powered flood monitoring, even in partial shade

Tree canopy, bridge decks, and north-facing banks cut solar yield. With an APM, an AWARE Flood Node can operate continuously even with some shade cover. Your team gets more latitude to site each sensor where it will do the most good.

Optional grid connection with battery backup

The AC connection is optional. Connect standard commercial power and the APM runs the node from the grid while keeping its battery charged. If the grid drops, the battery carries the site. Without AC, the APM runs on solar and battery alone.

How it works

How the AWARE Power Module manages solar, battery, and optional AC power

The APM manages its inputs without operator intervention. With no grid connection, solar charges the battery and the battery powers the node. When optional AC power is connected, the grid takes priority and the battery becomes backup.

1

Solar

1 square foot of high-efficiency paneling recharges the battery between events, even under partial shade. This is the standard, off-grid configuration.

2

APM battery

100 Wh of stored capacity carries the node through nights, storms, and grid outages, and supplies the extra draw of the radar water level sensor.

3

Commercial AC Optional

When a grid connection is available, AC powers the Flood Node and charges the APM battery at the same time. The site runs commercial-primary, battery-secondary.

Installation in three steps

  1. Mount the APM at the node site. The integrated pole-mount bracket and frame plate install with standard hardware.
  2. Connect the APM to the AWARE Flood Node. One cable. The node draws from the APM automatically.
  3. Optional: connect commercial AC power.Only if the site has grid power. Adds commercial-primary operation with the battery as backup.

Built for the field

A sealed, injection-molded enclosure, built to the standard you expect from an AWARE unit.

Customers expect an AWARE unit to keep working through hurricane-force storms and six-foot floodwaters. The AWARE Power Module is engineered to that expectation. Its sealed, injection-molded enclosure protects the battery and power electronics, the solar panel sits on a rigid frame plate, and a single sealed cable runs to the node.

  • Sealed, injection-molded enclosure protecting the battery and power electronics
  • Built for the same weather, water, and temperature extremes as the AWARE Flood Node
  • Integrated frame plate and pole-mount bracket
  • Fixed-tilt solar panel mounted on the frame plate
  • Single gland cable connection to the Flood Node
  • Integrated AC/DC supply for sites with an optional grid connection
  • Proven in hurricane-force storms
  • Six-foot floodwaters
  • 1,000+ AWARE sensors deployed nationwide

FAQ

AWARE Power Module FAQ

What is the AWARE Power Module?

The AWARE Power Module (APM) is a plug-and-play solar and battery power accessory for AWARE Flood Node devices. It adds 100 Wh of battery capacity and 1 square foot of high-efficiency solar, for approximately 4x the available power of a standard node, and accepts an optional AC grid connection.

Which AWARE devices are compatible with the APM?

The APM is a plug-and-play accessory for all AWARE Flood Node devices. It connects to new nodes and to units already deployed in the field.

How much additional power does the APM provide?

Approximately 4x the available power of a standard AWARE Flood Node. The APM adds 100 Wh of battery capacity and 1 square foot of high-efficiency solar paneling.

Do I need an APM to use the AWARE Water Level Radar?

The optional Water Level Radar (WLR) is a non-contact radar water level sensor, and it draws more power than the standard node supplies on its own. The APM enables full use of the radar. Our team will review your site and recommend the right configuration.

Do I need grid power to use the AWARE Power Module?

No. The grid connection is optional. Without AC power, the APM runs the Flood Node on solar and battery alone. When standard commercial AC is connected, the grid powers the node and charges the battery, and the battery takes over automatically if grid power is lost.

Will a Flood Node with an APM operate in the shade?

With an APM, an AWARE Flood Node can operate continuously even with some shade cover. Heavy canopy or full shade still calls for a site review. Share photos or coordinates with our team and we will advise.

How is the APM installed?

The APM mounts at the node site on its integrated pole-mount bracket and connects to the Flood Node with a single cable. Commercial AC power is an optional connection at the APM. No rewiring of the node is required.

How tough is the AWARE Power Module?

It is built to the standard customers expect from an AWARE unit. AWARE nodes have proven durability in hurricane-force storms and six-foot floodwaters, and the APM uses a sealed, injection-molded enclosure designed for the same field conditions. Full environmental ratings are published with the production release.

Is the APM covered by the AWARE warranty?

Yes. The APM carries the 12-month standard manufacturer's warranty, with an optional extended warranty of up to 36 months.

Can the APM be included in a grant-funded deployment?

AWARE systems may be eligible for funding under FEMA's BRIC and HMGP programs and state resilience programs. The APM is quoted as a component of a Flood Node deployment. Contact our team to discuss documentation support for your application.

When will the APM be available?

Production units are in final testing. Contact our team for current availability and lead times, and to include the APM in an upcoming deployment.
